In Season 1 of Game of Thrones, Catelyn Stark caught an assassin trying to kill Bran with a Valyrian steel dagger. Littlefinger told her that the blade was his, but he later claimed that he lost it to Tyrion Lannister.
Both Tyrion and Jaime believe that Joffrey was the one who sent the assassin after Bran. They also think that he gave the assassin a Valyrian steel dagger that he stole from King Robert Baratheon.
Littlefinger
Fans of Game of Thrones got some major relief in season 7 when Arya killed Littlefinger, a character we’ve been wishing would pay for all his power games since the first episode. But before he could die, it was finally revealed that Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) tried to kill bran Stark back in season 1 of the show.
As a master manipulator, Littlefinger was always scheming ways to move up in the ranks and get a leg up on his competition. In his early days, he schemed his way to the position of Master of Coin on King Robert’s Small Council.
He then manipulated Catelyn Stark and her daughter, Sansa, to get their trust. He even took her betrothed, Brandon Stark, to a duel when they were still teenagers.
Littlefinger was also known to be an avid hunter, and he used that skill to get a Valyrian steel dagger, which he later gave to the assassin who killed Bran. But who was responsible for ordering this assassination attempt?
Joffrey Baratheon
Joffrey Baratheon is a fictional character from the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin, and its HBO television adaptation Game of Thrones. He was introduced in 1996’s A Game of Thrones and subsequently appears in A Clash of Kings (1998) and A Storm of Swords (2000).
He is a strong-willed, quick-tempered person with an unchecked sadistic streak that leads him to trouble for which he constantly blames others. He lacks any sense of right and wrong and is prone to irrational and bad judgment.
When Catelyn Stark retrieved the Valyrian steel dagger, she thought it was evidence that Ned could use to prove that the Lannisters tried to kill Bran. But Littlefinger lied, saying that Tyrion was the last known owner of the blade.
It is thought that Joffrey sent the assassin to kill Bran after he heard his father Robert say that it would be a mercy to put Bran out of his misery. He wanted to impress his distant ‘father’ and gain his favour. He also wants to show Sansa he is compassionate by sacrificing Eddard’s life for her.
Cersei Lannister
The mother of Joffrey and sister of Tyrion, Cersei Lannister has had a troubled and tumultuous reign as Queen of Westeros. She is a cruel, vindictive woman who has committed many heinous acts against her children and other people.
In Season 1, Cersei attempted to kill Bran Stark. This attempt was facilitated by the infamous assassin Petyr Baelish, whose dagger is rumored to have belonged to Tyrion’s father.
It is a mystery as to who sent the assassin, but fans suspect that it was Joffrey, who overheard King Robert Baratheon admitting that putting Bran out of his misery would be the merciful and brave thing to do.
Her self-serving ways eventually lead to a myriad of political mistakes and collapses, including a dispute with the Iron Bank of Braavos, filling King’s Landing with sycophants rather than able and efficient men, and her son Tommen’s suicide. It’s also possible that her own sins contributed to her own downfall, especially after she confesses her infidelity with Lancel Lannister and Osney Kettleblack and undergoes a walk of shame.
Tyrion Lannister
Tyrion Lannister (played by Peter Dinklage) is a dwarf of noble birth, whose wits and resilience help him survive the chaos of a land torn by competing dynasties seeking power over Westeros. He has a hardened world view and a penchant for verbally brutalizing others, but he values kindness and goodness.
In the first season of Game of Thrones, Littlefinger tries to frame Tyrion as being behind an assassination attempt on Bran Stark. However, it is later determined that Joffrey Baratheon was responsible for the attempt.
Joffrey allegedly overheard King Robert saying that putting Bran out of his misery would be a mercy and a great gift. So, he snuck a dragonbone dagger and hired an assassin to kill Bran.
The knife was subsequently returned to Catelyn Stark, but she lied to Tyrion that he won it in a sports bet, which triggered the war between House Lannister and House Stark. It also prompted Catelyn to imprison Tyrion and eventually lead to her and son Robb’s death at the Red Wedding.
