Who is Ken Onion?

Ken Onion is an American knifemaker, industrial designer, and inventor. He is the founder of Ken Onion Shun, a company that produces knives and knife accessories.

Born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 1970, Onion started making knives as a hobby in his garage while attending college. After graduating from the University of Idaho with a degree in mechanical engineering, he moved to Kaneohe, Hawaii, and started working for Lamson & Goodnow as a knife designer. In 1995, he founded Ken Onion Shun, which produces knives and knife accessories.

Onion’s most famous invention is the SpeedSafe assisted-opening mechanism, which is used on many of his knives. He has also invented the Cryovac knife storage system and the Quikut Knife Sharpener.

Ken Onion is a member of the American Knifemakers Guild and has won several awards for his knives, including the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame Award. In 2012, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
